MoUD asks State Govts to adopt Intelligent Transport Systems

With a view to improve urban mobility, Minister of State for Urban Development Babul Supriyo today asked state governments and local bodies to adopt Intelligent Transport Systems in urban areas.

Stating that quick, reliable and sustainable urban mobility is the lifeline of quality urban life, the Minister said smart cities will provide bench marked transport systems.

He was addressing the four-day long 'Urban Mobility India conference and Expo' that concluded today. It was organized by the Institute of Urban Transport and MoUD.

Supriyo also gave away the 'Awards of Excellence' to 'Rahagiri' initiative of Gurgaon District Administration for a commendable emerging initiative in the category of 'Best Non-Motorised Transport Project'.
 

The Ministry's citation described this initiative as "one that can transform itself into a major effort at improving NMT facilities and promoting their use and, hence, worthy of Award".

Karnataka bagged four out of the 10 Excellence Awards.

Karnataka State Road Transport Corporation won the 'Award of Excellence' in the category of 'Best Intelligent Transport System Project' for their ITS initiative at Mysore that presents a comprehensive approach to ITS covering vehicle location system, passenger information system and fare collection.

Bangalore Metropolitan Transport Corporation was awarded for 'Best City Bus Service' while North-Eastern Karnataka Road Transport Corporation received an award in the same category for innovation for small cities.

Bangalore Traffic Police was honoured for their 'Best Initiative in Improving safety in Urban Transport'.

Other winners of Awards of Excellence include Bhopal Municipal Corporation for 'Best Urban Mass Transport Project', Corporation of Chennai for their 'Street Design Project', Atal Indore City Transport Services Limited for 'Ibus (BRTS) Project', Nirmal Foundation, Ahmedabad for 'G-Auto' Project and Logisure Solutions, Jaipur for 'Urban Delivery Van Network'.
