The mortal remains of Madhya Pradesh Assembly's Deputy Speaker and senior Congress leader, Harvansh Singh were consigned to the flames today near his ancestral village on the banks of the Banganga river with full state honours.

The funeral pyre was lit by Harvansh's eldest son, Rajnish Singh.

Madhya Pradesh Chief Minister Shivraj Singh Chouhan, Assembly Speaker Ishwardas Rohani, Congress General Secretary and former Chief Minister, Digvijay Singh, Parliamentary Affairs Minister Narottam Mishra, Congress Leader of Opposition Ajay Singh and Union Minister Kamal Nath's son, Nakul Nath, among others were present on the occasion.

Earlier, Himachal Pradesh Governor Urmila Singh paid her tributes to the departed leader by reaching Barra, his ancestral village.

Harvansh passed away at 65, in the wee hours today after a massive cardiac arrest. Though he was rushed to the Seoni district hospital and provided medical aid, all efforts to stabilise him proved futile.

He is survived by his wife, two sons and a daughter.

Harvansh was not only a former minister, but also a pillar of strength for the Congress Party in the state.

Madhya Pradesh Governor Ram Naresh Yadav also condoled the death of the senior Congress leader.
