Deputy leader of opposition in the Madhya Pradesh Assembly Bala Bachchan today demanded judicial probe into last month's botched-up cataract eye surgeries at a medical camp in Barwani district where some 40 persons lost eyesight.

"We want a judicial inquiry headed by retired or sitting judge of the High Court for impartial result," Bachchan told PTI. He is leading the Congress in the ongoing winter session in the absence of Satyadev Katare who is unwell.

Additional chief secretary of finance department is conducting probe into the tragedy at present.

Justifying boycott of the proceedings yesterday, Bachchan said it forced the Chief Minister Shivraj Singh Chouhan to come to the House and reply to the adjournment motion on the issue.

"As a result of our stand Chouhan announced a pension of Rs 5,000 per month for every person who lost eyesight in the camp...We had demanded life-long pension for the blinded people or Rs 10 lakh compensation. Chouhan accepted it," he said.
