A 40-year-old farmer allegedly killed himself by hanging from the roof of his thatched house in Bhadar village in the district yesterday, police said today.

Family members of the deceased Ramkripal Kushwaha claimed that he committed suicide due to indebtedness, while the police said investigation is underway.

"My son hanged himself using clothes in the thatched house in our agriculture field. He owed Rs 1.50 lakh to some persons and was unable to repay the debt," said Kushwaha's father Nathuram.

Ramkripal used to cultivate half acre of farm land in the village.

"We conducted postmortem and handed over the body to his family members," said Dr SP Shakyawar of Luvkush Community Health Centre.

Local police official P B Minj said they are investigating the incident.
