The Madhya Pradesh government has requested the Gujarat government to revisit its decision to fill the Sardar Sarovar Dam to full reservoir level (FRL) on humanitarian grounds.
A state government official Monday said 6000 families in 76 villages living in the catchment area of the dam have not yet been rehabilitated in Madhya Pradesh.
"Keeping this in view, the Gujarat government should not fill the dam," he added.
Power benefits of the dam located on the Narmada river are shared among Madhya Pradesh, Maharashtra and Gujarat.
The Full Reservoir Level (FRL) of the dam is fixed at RL 138.68 meters (455 feet). The Maximum Water Level is 140.21 meters (460 feet) while minimum draw down level is 110.64 metres (363 feet).
The Congress-ruled Madhya Pradesh and the BJP-ruled Gujarat have been sparring over rehabilitation of dam-affected people.
