This was conveyed by Chief Minister Shivraj Singh Chouhan to Sri Lankan President Mahinda Rajapaksa who yesterday laid a foundation stone for the Buddhist and Indic Studies University at Sanchi near here, sources said today.
Chouhan discussed with Rajapaksa the measures to further strengthen cultural ties between India and Sri Lanka on the occasion, they said.
Chouhan said every government is duty-bound to protect dignity of human life.
Tamilians wherever they live share the same cultural ethos. The resettlement of Tamilians displaced by civil war is not an issue of one state but the entire country, sources quoted the chief minister as saying.
According to sources, Chouhan expressed hopes that the issue would be resolved soon and cultural relations between the two nations will grow from strength to strength.
Rajapaska who laid the foundation stone for the university had observed that tolerance is of "equal importance" to both East and West as enmity and hatred lead to violence and destruction.
