Gupta chaired a meeting of top officials to review the law and order situation in view of the upcoming festival season and asked people to remain vigilant against rumours and SMSes aimed at disrupting peace in the state, official sources said.
Gupta directed officials to hold peace committee meetings at the police station level in the entire state. He asked the police to take strong action against those indulging in disrupting peace and advised people not to forward SMSes containing misleading information about Assam riots, they said.
The Minister asked the people to inform police immediately about such SMSes.
Gupta said the Centre should consider blocking social networking sites which are being used for spreading rumours, the sources said.
The meeting was attended by Additional Chief Secretary (Home), I S Dani, Director General of Police Nandan Dube and Additional DGP (Intelligence) Vivek Jouhri.
