"The state government should not only refrain from dilly-dallying tactics but also ensure that the 'Bhojshala' does not become a matter for politics," Govindacharya told reporters after taking a round of the disputed 'Bhojshala' here.

Bhojshala is an ancient Archaeological Survey of India (ASI) protected monument which Hindus believe is a temple of goddess Waghdevi (Saraswati) while Muslims treat it as a place of worship for them.

As per an ASI arrangement, Hindus perform puja in the premises every Tuesday, while Muslims offer Namaz on Fridays. Rest of the days the monument remains open for the general public.

With 'Basant Panchami' falling on Friday, Govindacharya urged the state government to take appropriate steps.

"In the absence of trust and dialogue, tension builds up and the state government should look after the interests of the common people," he said.

The shrine had in the past witnessed tension between two communities.
