Police probing the suicide of a 21-year-old MBBS student in Betul have arrested two persons, including a woman, who allegedly used to extract money from the deceased to buy drugs, police said.

According to police, Yash Pathe, a first year student of MBBS of a Bhopal-based college, hanged himself last month as he was apparently fed up with the torture.

He was found hanging at the residence of his relative in Betul on June 13.

Police arrested Shruti Sharma (22), the main accused in the case, and Shalin Upadhyay (22) from Pune last night and brought them here today, a senior officer said.

Pathe's father had alleged that his son had committed suicide due to ragging by his seniors in the college.

"Shruti Sharma and Shalin Upadhyay were arrested from Pune last night. They are being interrogated," said Betul Superintendent of Police D R Teniwar.

They were produced in a local court which remanded them in police custody for seven days.

He said a group of persons led by Sharma allegedly used to threaten Pathe and extract money from him to buy drugs.

"We would question them about the source of the drugs and narcotics substances they were using," he said.

A video had gone viral in which a woman and two men were purportedly seen thrashing Pathe with belts.

According to the officer, the accused used to beat Pathe if he refused to pay them money.

Earlier, police had arrested Gaurav Dubey (19) and Akash Soni (19) in connection with the case while another accused Kartik Khare (19) is on the run.

The accused duo were booked under sections 306 (abetment of suicide) and 34 (a criminal act is done by several persons) of the IPC, police said.
