"The implementation of programmes to cleanse the river is very tardy. Though the Ganga River Water Basin Authority was set up years ago, very few people know about the location of its office that too when the Prime Minister is heading it," Rajendra Aggarwal (BJP) said.

He was resuming the discussion on the steps taken by the government to protect the river from pollution and the Himalayas from ruthless exploitation.

Echoing similar view, Pardeep Tamta (Cong) said construction of dams in the upper Himalayas could be risky as it falls in Seismic Zone-V (earthquake prone) area.

Saidul Haque (CPI) said, "The river will be finished if necessary action in not taken soon. This will lead to cultural erosion."

B Mahtab (BJP) said poor implementation of various projects to save Ganga has caused wastage of government money.

He also demanded a detailed policy to save the Himalayas.

Anant Geete (SS), M Thambidurai (AIADMK), N N Rao (TDP) and Sanjay Singh Chauhan (RLD) also spoke.
