State-run MTNL today reported widening of its net loss to Rs 744.97 crore for the first quarter ended June 30.

The net loss for the company stood at Rs 733.23 crore for the corresponding period last fiscal, the company said in a filing to BSE.

Total income from operations also decreased to Rs 803.63 crore during the reported period as compared to Rs 856.02 crore in the year-ago period due to abolition of termination charges on fixed wireline and change in regulations on roaming charges, the filing added.

"Similarly, MTNL's expenditure on revenue sharing and roaming charges has also decreased by Rs 33.58 crore during this period due to abolition of termination charges on calls originating from fixed wireline," the filing said.

MTNL said despite the fact that it provides services in Delhi and Mumbai only, it has consistently been the third largest broadband service provider in the entire country.

"The company has deployed adequate capacity for mobile and broadband connections to meet the demand," it added.
