Muharram processions slow down traffic

Traffic snarls were reported in various parts of the city today, especially in central Delhi and south Delhi, amidst Muharram processions passing these areas during peak evening hours.

Traffic was thrown out-of-gear at, among others, Kashmere Gate, around Old Delhi's Chhota Bazar, Bara Bazar and Shia Jama Masjid areas, the ITO junction, Okhla, Nizamuddin and Mehrauli areas, said a traffic official.

The processions passed through several old Delhi localities which caused tailbacks at Paharganj bridge, Ajmeri Gate, Chelmsford Road, Connaught Place, Parliament Street, Red Cross Road, Tughlak Road, Aurobindo Marg and Jor Bagh, said the official.

Commuters faced inconvenience in negotiating congestions reported at Mathura Road, Maa Anandmai Marg, Mehrauli-Badarpur Road, Pankha Road and the Palam Dabri Road, said the official.
 

Bumper-to-bumper traffic was also reported on certain stretches on Ring Road with the worst situation witnessed between Safdarjung Hospital and Ashram Chowk, the official added.
