Coming to the defence of party chief Mulayam Singh Yadav, who has stoked controversy with his remark over gang-rape incidents, Samajwadi Party today claimed that his statement was distorted.

In a statement issued here, SP spokesman Rajendra Chaudhary said that the remark made during a programme in Lucknow on Tuesday clearly meant that innocent person should not be made an accused in a rape case.

"The remark of the SP supremo was presented in a manner by some elements as if an attempt was being made to shield a culprit, which is totally wrong. Some people are presenting his remark out of context," he alleged.

Mulayam has always advocated equality between men and women.

Yadav said on Tuesday,"Often if one person commits rape, four people are named in the complaint. Four people are named for rape, can it be possible? It is not practical. They probably say one was watching...Another was there... If there are four brothers, then all four are named.
