The Municipal Corporation of Greater Mumbai (MCGM) has decided to terminate services of Officer on Special Duty (OSD)/ Consultants.

A circular which was issued on May 27 states that as per orders of Municipal Commissioner from June 1, 2015, the services of all the officers appointed on OSD/Consultants are terminated.

The circular has also fixed the responsibility of the order's compliance on the chief of various departments.

"It would be the responsibility of the concerned department heads to ensure that no further appointments are made on such basis and if such appointments are not cancelled by June 1, 2015, then the head of the departments/Assistant Commissioner would be held responsible," it said.

Asked about the reason behind the move, Municipal Commissioner Ajoy Mehta told PTI, "There is lot of talent in the BMC and we need some fresh thinking."

The circular has been issued in the light of protest registered by an RTI activist Anil Galgali, whose RTI had revealed that the civic body had appointed as many as 40 retired employees as OSDs/consultants on contractual basis from January 1, 2010 to February 28, 2015.

The civic body has spent Rs 1.70 crores as fees for their services.

Galgali alleged appointment of OSD's was one of the reasons for corruption in the civic body.

Hailing the move, Galgali said, "Such steps would help MCGM to restore the confidence of common people. It is nice that the civic body is acting instantly on the complaints filed by common people.
