The Mumbai fire brigade got 50 calls of mishaps due to bursting of firecrackers in five days during the Diwali festival last week, an official has said.

This is an increase from similar incidents reported during the Diwali time in 2017, despite the Supreme Court restricting the time for bursting of firecrackers to two hours this year, he said.

The city's fire control room received a total of 196 calls of fire incidents between November 6 and 10, of which 50 were of mishaps due to bursting of firecrackers, a senior fire brigade official said Monday.

"Last year, there were 37 calls of blazes due to firecrackers. This indicates that appeals to exercise restraint while bursting crackers during the Diwali celebrations did not have much impact," he said.

There is a lack of sense of responsibility and alertness, resulting in frequent fire incidents, he added.
