Rohit Sharma blasted an unbeaten 33-ball 56, while openers Evin Lewis (47) and Suryakumar Yadav (44) also contributed as MI brought their campaign back on track.
Earlier, Suresh Raina (75 off 47 balls) and Ambati Rayudu (46 off 35 balls) did the bulk of scoring for Chennai after being asked to take first strike by Mumbai.
