Mumbai XI suffer second loss in MCC Murugappa Gold Cup hockey

Mumbai XI suffered a 1-5 loss against Bharat Petroleum in their second Group B match to be virtually out of the MCC Murugappa Gold Cup hockey tournament here tonight.

It was a second loss for Mumbai as they had lost to arch-rivals Air India 0-3 yesterday.

Mumbai grabbed the lead in the 11th minute with a goal by Anup Valmiki but BPCL soon turned the tables with concerted efforts to score five goals.

In this Tushar Khandekar starred with two goals (65 and 69 mins) and Amir Khan (14th), Gurupreet Singh (21m) and Sunil Somwarpet (70th Min) also sounded the board.
 

In the second match of the day, Punjab and Sind Bank, who lost their earlier match to Karnataka 1-2, beat the best of Railways 2-1.

International Gaganpreet Singh came up with a superb penalty conversion in the 11th minute. However, Railways found the equaliser through Amit Rohitas (48th min) but constant attacking game eventually helped the bankmen to find the winner through Jaskaran Singh, eight minutes before the hooter.

In the opening match today, OGNC toyed with Karnataka to squarely beat the latter by a whopping 6-3 margin.

ONGC's Jaswanth Singh capped himself to glory with three goals (21st, 27th and 60th mins).

Pretender Singh (16th), Mandeep Singh (57th) and Gurjinder Singh (67th) were the other scorers for ONGC, while Karnataka who sounded the boards first through Honnur Swamy were assisted by Abhishek with a brace in the 40th and 68th minutes.
