Jasvinder Sandhu, jailed for allegedly murdering 23-year-old researcher Neha Sharma, was able to perform his wife's last rites four days after her death on getting bail from Allahabad High Court.

Sandhu's bail application was earlier rejected by the Agra District and Sessions court and his family had to wait with his wife's body for four days as they waited for Sandhu to light the pyre as per her dying wish.

Sandhu yesterday performed the last rites of Preeti.

The Allahabad High court granted him short term bail till January 14 for the funeral rites.

The court will hear a fresh application for bail on January 15.

According to Sandhu's father Gurudutt, Preeti died after a brain hemorrhage, following depression in the wake of the arrest of her husband for murder. She left behind two minor children.

Sandhu was arrested along with the main accused, Uday Swarup, for murder of Neha Sharma, a research scholar in the science laboratory of the DEI University Dayal bagh, on March 15, last year.

Both Uday Swarup and Sandhu are in jail in Agra, facing trial for the murder.
