Murder case accused dies in police custody

An accused in a murder case, who was arrested today, died in police custody at the Chhapi police station in Vadgam taluka of Banaskantha district, police sources said.

Bhemjibhai Karen (30) was arrested by the Chappi police for allegedly murdering his distant relative Kankuben Karen from Bhangrodiya village of Banaskantha district.

Karen had surrendered to the police after allegedly killing Kankuben who had decided to discontinue her relationship with him after her marriage, police sources said.

He was kept in a police lock-up, they said.

"In the morning when a police constable tried to wake him up for tea Karen did not respond. He was then rushed to the community health centre (CHC) in Vadgam where he was declared dead," police sub-inspector Y M Belim said.
 

Karen's body was sent to Dharpur Medical Hospital in Patan for a post-mortem and the exact cause of his death would be ascertained only after the post-mortem report is out, he said.

Meanwhile, the police registered a case of accidental death and began probing further.
