A 37-year-old murder convict has died suspectedly due to illness at the high-security Tihar jail here, jail officials said today.

Sirajuddin, jali number 9, died at around 12 noon yesterday. He was lodged in the jail since 2009 in a murder case registered in Welcome police station, the officials said.

When his condition deteriorated fellow prisoners informed the jail authorities and he was taken to a hospital where doctors declared him dead.

The deceased inmate had a history of diabetes and heart disease and was undergoing treatment for many years, said the official.

Jail officials said that Sirajuddin's elder brother is also lodged in Tihar in connection with the murder case. He was informed about his death and other family members also reached the jail after receiving the information.

The death was reported to the local police by the jail officials and a magisterial enquiry has been started.

In order to rule out foul play in death of Sirajuddin and also as a precautionary step, jail authorities have sought post mortem of the deceased by a medical board at Deen Dayal Upadhyay hospital.
