Showrunner Ryan Murphy is making big strides with his efforts in bringing about gender equality on the small screen with the upcoming show "Pose".

The 51-year-old creator with FX network has set a record on TV by casting five transgender actors in series regular roles in the 1980s-set drama for a scripted show, according to The Hollywood Reporter.

The actors who have made it to the list include MJ Rodriguez, Indya Moore, Dominique Jackson, Hailie Sahar and Angelica Ross.

The five lead artistes were chosen after casting director Alexa Fogel led a six-month nationwide talent search. They will be playing authentic transgender characters in the show.

The drama looks at the juxtaposition of several portions of life and society in '80s New York, showcasing the rise of the luxury Trump-era universe, the downtown social and literary scene and the ball culture world.

In connection with Murphy's Half Initiative, "Pose" will also see new crop of transgender directors to be mentored through the showrunner's Directing Mentorship Programme.

The production is set to begin next month in New York.
