Murugesan takes office as NHRC member

Former Chief Justice of Delhi High Court Justice D Murugesan has assumed the office as member of the National Human Rights Commission (NHRC).

During his tenure as the Delhi High Court's Chief Justice, he had given a number of important decisions, including suo motu cognisance of the December 16 Delhi gangrape case and the setting up of a special court for day-to-day hearing of the case for expeditious trial.

He also issued directives to all lower courts to hold day-to-day hearings in sexual assault cases and to all private hospitals to admit victims of heinous crimes like rape and murder.
 

He also issued orders regarding implementation of Right to Education from nursery classes to ensure equal opportunity to students of all sections, ban on sale of junk food in schools, reforms in Tihar jail, more night shelters for homeless, periodical surprise check of fruits and vegetables in city markets for pesticides residues.

He was the Chief Justice of Delhi High Court from September 26, 2012 to June 9, 2013.

He was appointed as a Judge of the Madras High Court on March 2, 2000.
