Thousands of Muslims today celebrated Eid-ul-Fitr, which marks the end of Islamic holy month of Ramadan, with religious fervour and gaiety across Meghalaya.
Clad in their best attires, men and children offered Namaz-e-Eid at Eidgahs next to mosques in the state capital, at Byrnihat, Lad Rymbai, Dawki, Nongpoh and in the Garo Hills too.
Over 8,000 people offered prayers at the Eidgah ground of the Madina Masjid here. It is the biggest glass mosque in the entire north eastern region.
Meghalaya Governor K K Paul and Chief Minister Mukul Sangma greeted people of the state on the occasion.
"I hope that this joyous festival will promote universally cherished values of mutual respect, brotherhood and compassion in our society," Paul said in his message to the faithfuls.
Extending his wishes, Chief Minister Sangma said, "peace, forgiveness and unity are the heart of Eid and let us resolve to strengthen these bonds of community spirit."
Muslims constitute less than five per cent of the three million people in the state.
