Terming his musical tryst with 'Swabhoomi', the film on Nandigram land movement, a break from all previous projects, 'Disco King' Bappi Lahiri says the Dimpy Mahajan item number in the flick gels well with the tone and tenor of the script.

"I don't think the spunky number will deflect from the core of the movie. If you think about the sequence, the song serves a purpose,", the 'Ooo la la....' crooner told PTI here.

Bappi-da, who would describe the track as "contextual," said it would have to be judged considering the climax where farmers are made to sign on dotted lines.

In fact 'Swabhoomi' is also a musical on land movement, the first such film with fresh tracks - earthy and yet contemporary - dealing with serious issues, the man having introduced the 'Disco' mania in the 80s, said.

Nach Baliye 5 star Dimpy, having brought to life the scene in a mofussil bar with her item dance number in Swabhoomi, said, "It is not all about gyrations and swaying hips. The song precedes a twist in the tale as the village mafia and cops and others are in attendance inside the liquor joint with music in full blast and is integral to the story."

"All the songs in the film, including the baul number rendered by internationally acclaimed Kanailal Baul have the smell of earth, as music enhances and carries forward the plot, revolving around land stir," Bappi said.

Popular Actor Debosree Roy, having portrayed the character of Saraswati, based on a real life woman agitationist whose husband is missing, said, "It talks about the masses and is a feature film which dwells on a issue involving people's livelihood stake."

"Even the songs serve that purpose and add up to the drama but it is a film tackling social, sensitive issues but not a political film," she said.

Asked about the response of writer Mahasweta Devi to the film based on the Magsasay winner's novel 'Adhaba', the 'Unishe April' actor said "She had blessed me when I told her I will be her Saraswati."

Director Ujjwal, having made internationally acclaimed 'Escape from Taliban', said, "Swabhoomi's music is in sync with the pro-people milieu of the movie."

"Apart from the spunky 'Chikni Shabab Nashli Sharab', the other numbers include Esechho Jakhon Jetei Habe and Tagore number 'Jaowa Asha Bhalobasa' by Shaan, Sunidhi Chouhan, Bappida and our very own Gaboo (Elar Char Adhyay music director Gourab Chatterjee )," Ujjwal said.

The film, with Tapas Paul and Jackie Shroff in the cast besides Debosree, has been jointly produced by Ashtami Films and the director himself.
