A team of civil and army officials from Myanmar took part in a cleanliness drive Tuesday at the border towns of Moreh in Manipur's Tengnoupal district and Tamu in the neighbouring country, on the occasion of Mahatma Gandhi's 149th birth anniversary.

The drive, jointly organised by the Manipur police, the district administration and the Assam Rifles, began around 7am near border pillar 76 and continued for three hours, covering the two towns and the 'No Man's Land' in between, Superintendent of Police S Ibomcha said.

"At least 40 Myamarese officials took part in the cleanliness drive today. It was organised as part of Swacchata hi Seva campaign of the central government," he said.

A similar initiative, led by 7th Manipur Rifles Commanding Officer L Priyadarshini, was also witnessed at Khurai Lamlong Market in Imphal East district.

Over 20 personnel of Manipur Rilfes and volunteers of several local clubs took part in the Imphal East drive in the morning, which continued for around two hours, a senior police officer in the district said.
