Mystery shrouded the death of a 58-year-old man, an aide of Tamil Nadu Health Minister C Vijayabaskar whose premises were searched by the income tax department last month, near here today.

Subramanian, a building contractor, collapsed when he was visiting his farm located at Mohanur around 7.30 AM, a senior police official said.

Labourers in the farm took him to a government hospital were doctors declared him brought dead, police said.

A case has been registered and the body sent for post-mortem, police said.

He is survived by wife, daughter and son.

Last month, over 100 officials of the income tax investigation department conducted searches at several places in Tamil Nadu belonging to the minister and his associates in connection with a probe over alleged tax evasion.

An I-T official told PTI that Subramanian was an aide of the minister and had recently appeared before them for questioning as a follow-up to the raids.

Subramanian's house in Nammakkal district was also searched during the raids on April 7.

The searches on the premises of an associate of Vijayabaskar had allegedly revealed routing of Rs 89 crore for "distribution to voters" in RK Nagar Assembly constituency where bypoll was due on April 12.

The Election Commission had, however, cancelled the bypoll over allegations of use of money.
