The Mizoram University Teachers Association (MZUTA) today urged the union HRD ministry to expedite the process of appointing its vice-chancellor, saying the delay was affecting the overall academic functions of the central university.

"It has been 13 months since Mizoram University (MZU) had a permanent vice-chancellor. Due to this, promotion of many teachers are pending and some are already waiting for over two years. Delay in appointment not only affects the teaching communities but also the overall academic functions of the university," a statement released by MZUTA said.

It also said the delay in the appointment may invite "unhealthy political interference".

The former VC R Lalthantluanga was scheduled to retire on May 18, 2016, but his term was extended till February 28, 2017.

Following his retirement, Lianzela, the senior-most teacher of the university, took over the charge from March one.
