Tiwari, who has been the governor of Andhra Pradesh and Chief Minister of Uttar Pradesh and Uttarakhand, fought his son all the way to the Supreme Court before marrying Ujjwala.
Shekhar went to court against Tiwari in 2008, claiming he was born out of an affair between the Congress leader and his mother.
Shekhar's appointment by Uttar Pradesh government is seen as his acceptance as heir of N D Tiwari, who has cordial relations with Samajwadi Party supremo Mulayam Singh Yadav.
Mulayam often visits Tiwari at his residence here while the latter often speaks in favour of Samajwadi Party.
