The mortal remains of Naik Dipak Kumar Maity, who was martyred in a terrorist attack in Jammu and Kashmir, were consigned to flames in a military funeral at his native village in West Midnapore district today.

Thousands of people lined the streets at his village Masagram to bid farewell to the soldier, who was killed in a terrorist attack on an Army convoy in Jammu and Kashmir on June three, a Defence spokesperson said.

"Military, civil and police officials paid homage before military funeral was conducted," the spokesperson said.

Maity is survived by his wife Rikta and daughter Riya.

The 43-year-old was travelling from Udhampur to Srinagar as part of an Army convoy when it came under fire from terrorists near Lower Munda between Jawahar Tunnel and Wazur in Kashmir Valley.

Two soldiers were martyred in the incident and six others were injured.

The remains of Naik Maity and Gunner Manivannan G were earlier brought to Delhi where wreaths were laid by the Chief of Army Staff before being despatched to their respective homes, the spokesperson said.

Wreaths were laid on behalf of the Eastern Army Commander at the Eastern Command headquarter here before the mortal remains of Naik were sent to his native village of Masagram.
