A group of TRS activists today hurled stones at vehicles of leaders and workers of Telugu Desam Party (TDP) at Chityal village when they were proceeding towards Nalgonda district in Telangana to take part in a bandh called against burning of their party office.
The bandh was called by TDP in Nalgonda today in protest against ransacking and torching of the party office in that town yesterday allegedly by TRS activists.
They were protesting the move by Andhra Pradesh government seeking to stop power generation at Srisailam hydroelectric power station.
According to police, Telugu Desam MLAs E Dayakar Rao, Revanth Reddy and other party leaders viz. L Ramana, M Narasimhulu and scores of party workers were on their way to Nalgonda when police prevented them from proceeding further near Chityal.
"The TDP leaders and workers squatted on the highway in protest even as a group of TRS activists suddenly pelted stones damaging window panes of Rao's car while two other cars were partially damaged in the incident," Nalgonda District Superintendent of Police T Prabhakar Rao said.
The SP told that there was no clash between TRS and TDP activists though some media reports said that violence broke out as workers of both the parties engaged in a scuffle.
"Police immediately intervened and dispersed TRS activists while TDP leaders were taken into preventive custody," the SP said.
With regard to the shutdown, another police officer said the bandh passed off peacefully barring the Chityal incident and evoked a partial response.
Over 250 TDP activists were taken into preventive custody across Nalgonda district, besides around 20 TRS workers and all of them were later let off, Prabhakar Rao said.
TRS, which held protests and demonstrations yesterday in Nalgonda and Warangal districts, besides Hyderabad, over sharing of water and electricity between Telangana and Andhra Pradesh, has opposed AP Chief Minister N Chandrababu Naidu writing a letter to Krishna River Water Board requesting it to suspend power generation at Srisailam Project.
