An influential students body of Assam today urged the Centre to name Guwahati railway station after legendary singer-composer Bhupen Hazarika.

All Assam Students Union conveyed this to Home Minister Rajnath Singh when its delegation met him here.

"We urge you to take the initiative of naming the Guwahati railway station after Bhupen Hazarika," AASU said in a memorandum.

Hazarika, who was honoured with Padma Vibhushan, died on November 5, 2011 at the age of 85.

AASU, which had signed the Assam Accord with the Union Government in 1985 after a six-year agitation against illegal immigrants from Bangladesh, also demanded full implementation of the pact.

"The Home Minister has assured us that no foreigners who had entered Assam after 1971 will be allowed to stay in the state," AASU advisor Samujjal Kumar Bhattacharya said.

Bhattacharya said Singh also assured the AASU delegation that the central government is committed to implementing the Assam Accord and take all possible steps to completely seal the Indo-Bangladesh border.

The AASU urged the Home Minister to complete the process of preparing the National Register of Citizens by including the names of "genuine" Indian nationals and ensure that no land belonging to Assam is handed over to Bangladesh under the Indo-Bangladesh land boundary agreement.
