Leader of Opposition in Maharashtra Legislative Council Dhananjay Munde today demanded that the government accept the recommendations of the Justice Bhatia committee and appoint members of the Nanded Gurudwara Sahib, the most important shrine of Sikhism in the state.
Munde (NCP) was speaking on 'Nanded Sikh Gurudwara Sachkhand Shri Hujur Apachalnagar Sahib bill', tabled in the Upper House today.
Minority Affairs and Waqf Minister Eknath Khadse (BJP) said the existing law had been enacted by the erstwhile Hyderabad princely state (of which Nanded was a part).
The government wanted to bring in a new act post-Independence, and also wanted that more than 10 members can be appointed on the Gurudwara board from Maharashtra's quota, he said.
No non-Sikh can become member of the Gurudwara trust and Amritsar Gurudwara has the last word on appointment, he said.
"The amendment bill will allow us to appoint four trustees from Nanded city and two from other cities in the state," Khadse said.
The state had accepted most of the recommendations of the Bhatia committee and therefore the opposition should not oppose the bill, he said.
