Puducherry Chief Minister V Narayanasamy today launched his campaign for the crucial November 19 by-poll to Nellithope Assembly constituency.

The AICC had yesterday announced his candidature for the Nellithope seat.

Narayanasamy was sworn in as the tenth Chief Minister of Puducherry on June 6.

69-year-old Narayanasamy, who had served as Minister of State in the Prime Minister's Office in the second UPA government and as MoS Parliamentary Affairs in UPA-I, did not contest the May 16 Assembly polls.

A John Kumar of the Congress had vacated the seat to enable Narayanasamy contest a by-election before December 6 deadline for getting elected as a Member of the Legislative Assembly.

Congress had a strength of 15 members and its ally DMK two in the 30-member Assembly before the resignation of John Kumar.

Volunteers of the ruling Congress and also its alliance partner DMK participated in the campaign along with Narayanasamy, who is contesting against AIADMK's Om Sakthi Segar, a former MLA.

Narayanasamy and the volunteers of the Congress and DMK offered worship at the Anandamuthu Mariamman temple in Nellithope before kickstarting the campaign.

Senior AICC leader Ghulam Nabi Azad and party in-charge of Puducherry Mukul Wasnik would be campaigning for him soon, Narayanasamy told PTI.
