Officials of National Commission for Scheduled Tribes (NCST), including its chairman, today held a high-level meeting with the Chief Secretary and DGP of Assam over the situation following the serial attacks on tribals by NDFB(S) militants.

According to an official release, NCST Chairman Rameshwar Oraon, accompanied by officials of the Commission, held a meeting with the Chief Secretary Jitesh Khosla and DGP Khagen Sarma this morning.

"In the meeting, he (Oraon) had detailed discussions about the recent incidents of violence in the state and the situation emerging from it. He was briefed about all the steps taken by the state government on the issue," the release said.

The statement claimed that Oraon expressed satisfaction at the handling of the entire situation by the government, particularly the fact that no large scale community clashes were allowed to happen subsequent to the terrorist strike and

that the communal harmony was not allowed to get disturbed.

"He (Oraon) also expressed satisfaction at the relief and rehabilitation arrangements made by the Government of Assam.

He, however, expressed his apprehension about rumour mongering and appealed to all concerned not to give credence to rumour mongering or spread rumours," the release said.

The meeting was also attended by the Principal Secretary (Home), Principal Secretary (WPT&BC) and Assam State Disaster Management Authority CEO, it added.

Altogether 81 people, including 26 women and 18 infants, have been killed since December 23 evening in serial attacks by NDFB(S) terrorists, retaliatory violence and police firing across Kokrajhar, Sonitpur, Udalguri and Chirang districts.

Nearly 1.8 lakh people belonging to both Adivasi and Bodo communities are living at 136 relief camps in four districts.
