The National Green Tribunal will hear on January 11 the issue of protection of environment and biodiversity in North Bengal.

"We have found shocking pictures of North Bengal that will wipe out our biodiversity there if not checked immediately. We have submitted evidence to prove it. The hearing at the National Green Tribunal is on January 11," environmentalist Subhas Datta said here today.

He has moved the green court to protect the environment, forests, rivers and biodiversity of North Bengal.

Datta said he has submitted 260 photographs with the tribunal on the rampant flouting of laws and creation of danger to forest, rivers and putting the hills at stake.

He also alleged that even state government has flouted the law and set up hotels and resorts at forest land which is prohibited by law.

Datta said some 17 major rivers are affected by illegal mining of sand or stone or man-made blockades to reclaim land and other misuse which is going on.
