About 23 lakh cases were today settled in the National Lok Adalats held at all levels from the taluk courts to the High Courts across the country.

The National Lok Adalat, organised by the National Legal Services Authority (NALSA) along with the respective State Legal Services Authorities, dealt with cases ranging from criminal compoundable, recovery, cheque bounce, motor accident claims, family and matrimonial disputes, labour disputes, land acquisition, sales tax, income tax and many others.

"Approximately 23 lakh cases as per the figures received till 4.30 PM, which include 7 lakh pending and 16 lakh pre-litigation cases, have been settled. The total value of the settlement amount reached today is Rs 900 crore," NALSA said in a press statement.

It said the National Lok Adalat "greatly benefited the common man and it has been achieved because of the legal services authorities/committees and the cooperation of the state governments and local administration, apart from the financial institutions.

"The aim is to reduce pendency as well as prevent additional litigation swathing the courts, where settlements are possible," NALSA said.

It said the national-level lok adalat was organised under the patronage of Chief Justice of India T S Thakur and Justice Anil R Dave, who is also the Executive Chairman of the NALSA.
