National policy for domestic workers under consideration: Govt

The govt is also working to amend the contract labour law to safeguard their interest

The government is considering a a national policy for domestic workers and also a proposal to amend the contract labour law to safeguard their interest, the Rajya Sabha was informed today.

"Yes. A National Policy for domestic workers is under consideration of the government," Minister of State for Labour and Employment Vishnu Deo Sai said in a reply to question asked in the Rajya Sabha.

Replying to another question, the Minister said, "To safeguard the interest of contract workers further in terms of wages and social security, a proposal to amend the Contract Labour (Regulation and Abolition) Act 1970 is under consideration of the government."
 
He maintained that there is no provision for regularisation of the contract labour under the Contract Labour (Regulation and Abolition) Act 1970.

"Hence no such proposal is under consideration," he added.
