Punjab minister Navjot Singh Sidhu today released new breeds of fish into the Beas on World Environment Day.
A large number of fish and other aquatic animals were found dead in the Beas last month after molasses from a sugar factory leaked into the river.
Accompanied by party workers, Sidhu entered the Beas on a boat and released new breeds of small fish in the river.
Sidhu said, "A large number of fish died in the Beas last month. Though that loss cannot be compensated, we have released new breeds of fish into the water. The effort will continue."
"It is just the start of an initiative. Today, we have released around 10,000 fish into the Beas," he added.
