As the search continued for the eighth day today to locate a young Naval sailor, missing after saving a woman, the Navy has ordered a Board of Inquiry to investigate the incident.

24-year old Vishnu Unni of INS Sharda here was returning to the Naval base on October 3 afternoon when he spotted the woman drowning. He immediately jumped from the Vikrant Venduruthy Bridge and rescued her.

The woman had jumped into sea here with her six-month old child, who later died in hospital.

The Navy launched a hectic search soon after the incident. A fast attack craft was yesterday deployed up to the Alapuzha coast, Naval sources said. About 12 nautical miles from the coast was being searched, the sources said.

They said a Board of Inquiry had been ordered to look into the circumstances leading to his disappearance.

The father and relatives of the sailor, who hails from Palakaad, are still camping in the naval base for some news about their missing son.

Braving strong currents and in total disregard for his personal safety, he put both the woman and the child into a boat of the Cochin Shipyard Limited, which had reached the spot by then.
