"NC-Congress coalition is opposed to extending the 73rd amendment of the Constitution to J-K which would empower Panches and Sarpanches," Col Uttam Singh Manhas, BJP candidate for Jammu seat said during a tour of Poonch border district of Jammu and Kashmir ahead of MLC elections.
He said his party was in favour of empowering local bodies in the state and would endeavour for the extension of 73rd amendment to the Constitution in Jammu and Kashmir.
The 73rd amendment to the Constitution grants constitutional status to elected rural local bodies.
Manhas said, if elected, he would ensure that National Identity Cards (ADHAAR) are issued to all for the progress of the general masses.
Elections to fill up two vacancies in the Jammu and Kashmir Legislative Council from the Panchayat quota will be held on December 3.
