Ruling National Conference today paid tributes to Awami Action Committee founder Mirwaiz Moulana Mohammad Farooq and senior Hurriyat leader Abdul Gani Lone on their death anniversaries.

"NC president Farooq Abdullah, working president (and Chief Minister) Omar Abdullah and general secretary Sheikh Nazir Ahmed have paid glorious tribute to Mirwaiz Farooq on his 24th martyrdom anniversary and Lone on his 12th martyrdom anniversary," the party said in a statement here.

Mirwaiz Farooq was assassinated by gunmen on May 21, 1990, while Lone fell to the bullets in 2002 during a rally taken out to commemorate the 12th death anniversary of the former at Eidgah in downtown Srinagar.

"Mirwaiz was a visionary and respected son of the soil who had contributed greatly in serving the cause of Islam, education and public service in Kashmir," the NC president said adding the contributions of the Mirwaiz family will be remembered for a long time to come.

Abdullah, Omar and Sheikh Nazir have also paid tributes to Lone on his 12th death anniversary and said the assassination of various Kashmiri leaders highlighted the pain and agony suffered by this nation.

"Moderate voices had rendered great sacrifices in Kashmir and these sacrifices are valued and respected above political and partisan lines," the statement, quoting the party leader, said.
