The National Conference's women's wing Monday took out a protest march against price hike of fuel and essentials here, terming the situation as a fallout of the BJP-led government's "manifestation of the anti-people policies".
State vice president of NC women's wing and former MLA Bimla Luthra led the rally from party headquarters at Sher-e-Kashmir Bhavan with participants carrying placards and raising slogans against the soaring prices of essential commodities.
Scores of women activists marched through the Residency Road and the historic Raghunath Bazar and staged a protest at the famous City Chowk in the heart of the city before dispersing off peacefully, officials said.
"Housewives are the worst hit due to price hike," Luthra said and urged Governor Satya Pal Malik to take "corrective measures for checking the skyrocketing prices" of all the essentials, especially fuel.
She expressed surprise over soaring fuel prices "despite decrease in the price of crude oil in the international market" and said this has not only impacted the mobility of the common man but resulted in escalation of prices of all the commodities.
"Frustrated by the price hike, the people are forced to take to the streets to express their rage and stage protests," the NC leader said, adding the 'Achhe Din' (good days) promise of the BJP has proved to be a "crude joke" as the ground realities are "haunting the poor".
She accused the BJP of "failure on all fronts" and said it has created a "mess across the country" during the past over four years.
