The Narcotics Control Bureau (NCB) has arrested two persons from Murshidabad district after seizing 17 kg of a chemical compound used to prepare heroin, a senior officer said on Monday.

Acting on a tip-off, the NCB sleuths conducted a raid on the intervening night of July 27 and 28 at the residence of Mohammed Taihirul Islam's residence in Murshidabad's Bansgara and seized over 17.140 kg of acetic anhydride from his possession, he said.

Questioning Taihirul, the sleuths arrested another Mohammed Shariful Islam from Lalgola area in the same district, they said.

"Shariful is the actual owner of the seized chemical compound and he has admitted his crime. We are talking to him to find out who else are associated with him," he said.

On the price of the seized material, the IPS officer said, "The price is yet to be ascertained because it varies from one place to the other. In West Bengal the rate is Rs 40,000 to Rs 50,000 per litre as per demand and supply," he said.
