National Commission for Backward Classes Chairman Justice V Eswaraiah today met Chief Minister Tarun Gogoi and urged him to order classification of OBCs to find out the most backward and socially disadvantaged section among them.
Gogoi also agreed that there was need for classification of castes into backward, most backward and extremely backward categories depending on social, educational and economic factors, CMO sources said.
Justice Eswaraiah pointed out that the "creamy layer" principle is one of the parameters to identify the relatively wealthier and better educated members among the backward classes.

It must be ensured that the most backward and disadvantaged section among the OBCs reap the benefit of government sponsored educational and professional benefit programs, he added.
Justice Eswaraiah further pointed out that the OBCs are entitled to 27 per cent reservations in public sector employment and higher education and called for filling up of the vacant posts.
The Chief Minister pointed out that the 19 Development Councils have been constituted so that each community can develop and prosper.
Justice Eswaraiah also appreciated the functioning of the development councils and utilisation of funds for backward classes.
The other members of commission present during the discussion were S K Kharventhan, Ashok K Saini, Shakeel-ul Zaman and Member Secretary AK Mangotra.
