National Commission for Minorities (NCM) has written to the Jammu and Kashmir government for setting up of a Minority Commission in the state.

Replying to a question on setting up of the Minority Commission during a two-day long state level workshop organised by Sangarsh RTI Movement here, National Minority Commission Wajahat Habibullah today said, they have written to the state government in this regard and it has informed that they are working on a formula to establish the Commission in the state.

Minorities in Jammu and Kashmir including Sikhs and Hindus, have been demanding a Minority Commission in the state.

While emphasising the need to empower panchayats, Habibullah said, the state government should take steps in this direction.

"Government should take all necessary steps to empower Panchayats. On their part, Panches and Sarpanches should convene regular Gram Sabhas to put pressure on the government for their empowerment," he added.
