After ensuring removal of senior Congress leader Shivajirao Deshmukh as legislative council chairman, NCP is now eyeing the post of public accounts committee (PAC) chairman.

PAC is a house panel of the members of the state legislature, which is headed by the main opposition party.

Sources said NCP legislature party leader Ajit Pawar met Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis, seeking the post of PAC chairman for former Assembly Speaker and NCP leader Dilip Walse Patil.

According to sources, the Leader of Opposition in the Assembly has to recommend the name for the PAC chairman's post. However, Leader of Opposition Radhakrishna Vikhe Patil's appointment is interim.

Speaker Haribhau Bagde had said in Nagpur last year that he was yet to take a decision on the Leader of Opposition post since he had received applications from Congress and NCP.

He would take a final decision after hearing both the sides and till then he was appointing Vikhe Patil who was the group leader of Congress which had 42 MLAs, while NCP has 41 members.
