NCSC Vice-Chairman Raj Kumar Verka was here to inquire into the alleged custodial death of Bharat Bhushan, who was picked up by cops on Saturday and taken to the Rajendra Park police station where, his family claimed, he was beaten to death.

The victim's father, Jai Bhagwan, told Verka that Bharat was picked up by police after his daughter-in-law Neetu had consumed poison after an altercation with his son. Neetu, however, survived.

At the same meeting, Neetu demanded that she be provided with a government job to raise her two children as there was no earning member in the family after her husband's death.

Later, Verka told reporters that an officer of the rank of Assistant Commissioner of Police (ACP) will carry out an investigation in the case.

The NCSC Vice-Chairman also said that he had directed Gurgaon administration to get the statement of the affected family members registered by a sub-divisional magistrate.

An identification parade of police personnel of the concerned police station will also be carried out, he said.

Verka said he has recommended the Haryana government to set up separate police stations and fast track courts for scheduled castes in the state.

The NCSC Vice-Chairman was critical of the Haryana government for the increasing number of cases of atrocities against SCs, and said the Commission plans to soon review all such cases that had taken place in the state.
