Taking strong note of rise in
atrocities against dalits, the National Commission for Scheduled Castes (NCSC) has sought autonomy in its functioning, the commission's top official today said.
"The commission has been intervening in each and every case of atrocities against dalits. And there has been sudden surge in atrocities against dalits, therefore it is required that commission should be given autonomy and independence in its functioning," NCSC chairman P L Punia said.

In these reports we have demanded that findings of the commission should be mandatory as it is vital for action against those who are responsible for atrocities against dalits, Punia told PTI.
Punia is a Congress Rajya Sabha member.
He said these reports will be tabled in Parliament along with with the action taken report submitted by the Social Justice Ministry.
Besides this we have also recommended various measures for safeguards for SCs and overall economic and social development of the community.
Punia said the commission has also demanded separate allocation of funds in the Union Budget for the commission. At present, the administrative ministry allocates funds to the commission.
