The National Commission for Women (NCW) conducted a gender sensitization programme here today to bring a higher level of sensitivity among Bihar police personnel who are the first point of contact for women in distress.
The commission conducted the one-day Gender Sensitization Training Programme at the Bihar Agriculture Management & Extension Training Institute (BAMETI), in the state capital.
"As crime against women manifest in various forms and the police may often be the first point of contact for the distressed, their role and handling thereafter, is critical in responding to preventing violence against women. Being frontline functionaries, the police are expected to respond in an empathetic and sensitive manner," the NCW said in a statement.
It is imperative that all police organisations undertake suitable initiatives to periodically train all personnel at all levels to sensitize them on gender issues. By observing higher sensitivity, the police can play a pro-active role in preventing violence against women, it said.
Cyber Law Expert Shri Rakshit Tandon trained police officers on topics covering a wide ambit of issues such as cyber security, accessibility of police in crime against women, matrimonial offences and role of police.
According to the statement, about 280 officers of the Bihar Police participated in the programme.
