NCW seeks report on pathetic condition of disabled girl: NGO

The National Commission for Women (NCW) has taken suo-moto cognisance of news reports on the pathetic living conditions of a hapless disabled woman at Kungal Balti village in Shimla district, an NGO claimed today.

The NCW took cognisance of the condition of Anitu (26) after it was brought to light, claimed Chairman Umang Foundation Ajay Srivastav, who has urged the Himachal Pradesh government to rescue and provide her shelter and medical facilities.

He said the Chairperson of NCW Lalita Kumarmanglam had told him over phone from Delhi that the commission had sought a report from the state government on the issue.
 

"The chairperson said the commission was serious about violation of human rights, especially in remote areas and takes action whenever any such case comes to its notice," Srivastav claimed, adding if needed a NCW member would come and probe the matter.

He said Anitu alias Nooni, who cannot stand, walk or speak, has been left to fend for herself as her maternal grandparents cannot look after her because of their failing health.

"Her grandparentsRam Singh and Kampu Devido not want to be separated from the girl, but are also worried about would happen to her after they pass away," Srivastav claimed, adding the girl lives in unhygienic conditions.

She needs immediate medical assistance and rehabilitation. We have approached the Principal Secretary for Social Justice and Empowerment send her to home for destitute women, he said.
